Configuring an Item Kitchen Display

An Item Kitchen Display (Item KDS) will show items from desired categories on a screen, which can then be bumped individually. These can be useful for your kitchen's staff to keep track of each item they have to prepare. 

Go to the Manage > System tab in HUB (Direct Link), select your store from the dropdown, then select the 'KDS Config' option

After selecting 'KDS Config', you will see a table of all of the current stations assigned as kitchen displays, as well as buttons to add new kitchen displays

(1) From this Menu, you can add a new Item Display with the 'New Item Display' button at the top of the window, or (2) you can edit an existing Item Display by selecting the gear icon to the right of the KDS's name.

• (3) Select the Trashcan icon to the right of a display to deactivate that station as a KDS and clear all of its settings.

Selecting the gear icon or 'New Item Display' will bring up the Item Display configuration window, which contains the following tabs:

(1) The General tab contains options for customizing the formatting and behavior of the Item Display, such as adjusting the text size, text color, or enabling/disabling the 'Order Up!' audio alert, while the (2) Display Categories and (3) Order Types tabs allow you to customize which items will actually appear on this Item Display

Selecting the 'General' tab will allow you to adjust all of the following settings on this Item Display:

• (1) The Computer Name dropdown allows you to select which station the kitchen display rules should apply to. This can be used to temporarily convert a regular station to a kitchen display, if needed.
  • After a Kitchen Display is set up, this usually does not need to be changed.
• (2) Text Size lets you choose the font size the Item Display will use.
  • Normal, Large, and Extra Large sizes are available.

• (3) Caution Minutes sets the time limit (in minutes) before an item's color tag will change to yellow.
  • This number should always be smaller than Warning Minutes (see below)
• (4) Warning Minutes sets the time limit (in minutes) before an item's color tag will change to red.
  • This number should always be larger than Caution Minutes (see above)
• (5) Recall Minutes sets the time limit (in minutes) for how long an item can be recalled after being bumped.
• Colors can be selected for each of the following item elements:
  • (6) Item Name - Color used for the name of the menu item to be prepared
  • (7) Note Color - Color used on any item note included alongside an item
  • (8) Preference Color - Color used for any preference member selected as part of a menu item
  • (9) Modifier Color - Color used for an item's modifiers
    • In addition to the standard modifier color, different colors can also be selected for specific sub-types of modifiers:
      • (10) NO Modifiers Color - Color used when a modifier is removed from an item
      • (11) Extra Modifiers Color - Color used when an item's modifier is set to 'Extra'
      • (12) PS Mods - Color used when an item includes a preselected modifier
        • Note: In order for the preselect to display, 'Display Preselect in Kitchen' must be enabled for that preselected modifier. See this page on the Modifiers subcategory of the Menu Editor for more information on this setting.
• (13) Active is the main setting that will enable/disable the kitchen display on a station.
  • If a Kitchen Display goes down for any reason, you can deactivate it by disabling this setting, and the display's other settings will remain intact for whenever you are able to get the kitchen display back online.
• (14) Use Prep Time will use the listed Prep Times on each menu item to determine when they should appear on the Item Display.
• (15) Labels Upon Completion will print item labels for the items on an order that appear on this Item Display once the last item from that order has been bumped from this Display.
  • This setting is intended for stores with multiple Item Displays - A Stage Event at the end of the MakeItem stage can be used to print labels for stores with only one Item Display
• (16) Show Production Items will display your menu's Production Items in a row at the top of the Item Display window, alongside required counts of each item

• (17) Priority Order Type will select an order type whose items will be prioritized over other items that appear on this display.
  • Example: If the priority order type is set to Dine In, then items from Dine In orders will always appear at the top of this display, with items from all other orders following after.
• (18) Max Items allows you to choose how many items can be displayed at one time before additional items are queued to display after current items get bumped.
  • This can be set to any number between 9 and 25.
• (19) Horizontal Modifiers will change the modifier format and print all modifiers for an item on the same line
  • Example:
    
  • Note: turning on this setting will cause all modifiers to print in the default Modifier Color, even if different colors are set for No/Extra/PS mods.
  • Disabling this will print each modifier on a separate line.
  • This option is incompatible with 'Use Mod Category'.
• (20) Check For Unique Preferences allows the display to show preference members marked with a different Kitchen Print Category than the item they are attached to. This is useful for cases where a preference member (such as a choice of side item) needs to appear on a display that its assigned item would not normally appear on
  • Example: If a store has a combo item with a sandwich and a choice of a soup item, they can configure a preference for the choice of soup and assign each preference member to a 'Soups' print category. If the store has an Item Display set to show the 'Soups' category only and has 'Check for Unique Preferences' turned on, that display will show the selected Soup preference member any time the combo item is ordered, even though the Sandwich will not appear on this display.

• (21) Use Audio Alert will play a short audio clip whenever a new item appears on a previously empty Item Display
  • The default clip is an 'Order Up!' sound effect, but can be changed to any other desired sound by replacing the file at C:\Revention\KDSAlert.wav
    • For assistance changing the Audio Alert, reach out to HungerRush Support with a .wav file of your desired sound.
• (22) Display Default Preferences determines whether an item's preference is shown if the preference is left at its default.
  • If Disabled, only manually selected preference choices will appear on this Item Display.
• (23) Display Table Number allows you to choose whether a table number is listed alongside the items.
• (24) Filter by Order Type allows you to restrict this Item Display to only show items from specific order types.
  • Once enabled, a new 'Order Types' tab will appear at the top of the Item Display settings window. This tab allows you to select which order types will appear on this Display by moving the desired tabs to the right column.
• (25) Use Mod Category will change the background color of modifiers based on the modifier category they have set in the menu editor.
  • This setting is incompatible with 'Horizontal Modifiers'

• (26) Allow Auto Qty Pref Mbrs will auto-combine all identical preference members on an item into one line with a quantity number.

  • Example: In the below screenshots, the Pizza item has the same preference member 'Breadstix' selected for two different preference choices:

  • IMPORTANT NOTES:
    • This setting will only function if 'Auto Quantity Printing' is enabled at both the Menu and Group levels. See these articles on our Menu Editor for more information on enabling this setting:

    • This setting will only combine identical preference members on the same item. If the same preference member is selected once on two different items, it will be listed separately beside each item.
• (27) Show Recipe will show an item's recipe alongside it on the Item Display
  • Important Note: This setting requires 'Recipes on Item KDS' to be enabled in your store's Install Settings. Contact HungerRush Support for assistance adjusting this setting if you encounter issues using the 'Show Recipe' option on your KDS.

Once you finish customizing the general settings for the Item Display, you must then select Display Categories that will appear on this display, and (optionally) Order Type Filtering to restrict which orders will have items appear on this display.

(2) The Display Categories tab will allow you to select the Kitchen Print Categories that this Item Display will show when orders are sent.

• After selecting this tab, you will see all of your menu's Kitchen Print Categories broken into two columns:

• All categories on the right will be shown on the display, while the categories on the left will be hidden.
  • In this example image, any item assigned to the categories 'Kitchen2', 'Desserts', or 'Salad' would appear on this display.
• Kitchen Print Categories can be configured in the Kitchen Printers section of the Printer Configuration menu. See this article for more information on adding Kitchen Print Categories, or this article for info on adding/modifying the Kitchen Print Category on an item.

(3) If 'Filter by Order Type' (setting 27, see section above) is enabled, a third tab will appear to allow you to customize which order types will appear on this Item Display.

• This functions identically to the display categories tab; order types on the right will have items displayed on the KDS, while order types on the left will be hidden.

• In the above example image, only items from 'ToGo', 'Web Delivery', 'Web Pickup', and 'Catering' orders would appear on this display, while all other order types will be hidden.

Once you have finished configuring the Item Display with your desired settings, press the 'Save' button at the bottom right to finalize your changes.

Note: After any changes to your kitchen display settings, you must restart the KDS that you adjusted the settings on. The KDS can be restarted by pressing the power button on the control box attached to this display (Typically mounted near the monitor on a wall)
